Leave it alone. Vegetable-tanned leather wants the oil from your hands, not from a tin.
If it gets wet, blot it and let it dry slowly, away from heat. It may darken where it was wet; that evens out within a few weeks of use.
Once a year, or when it feels dry, rub in a fingertip of neutral leather balm with your palm and leave it overnight. Less is better. Never use anything with silicone, and never oil the edges.
Scratches are part of it. Most rub out with a thumb. The ones that do not become the grain.
